PRAMU stands for the Pataphysical Research and Metachanic Union. The short story is that we noticed that there were a lot of people experimenting with world-mutating technologies in Detroit and decided to unionize them. Pataphysics is an area of study that investigates beyond the apparent limits of possibility. It means impossible solutions to imaginary problems.

We started out as a Pop-Up shop in the West Village of Detroit in October, 2012. The shop space drew on a retrofuturist theme that is roughly a cross between an Explorer’s Club and the 1933 World’s Fair. Think obsolete maps, old (pseudo)scientific diagrams, images and symbols from obscure or esoteric traditions. The goal was everything pre-1970 at least, the older the better. However, PRAMU is ultimately about good design, and the initial selection follows a certain style that we will seek to maintain.
